Because of all this, EVs are gaining popularity and people are showing interest in buying EVs. The EVs do not produce gaseous exhausts and their operation is very-quiet and cheap compared with IC engine vehicles. The alternative for these IC engine vehicles is electric vehicles (EVs) because EVs use electricity as a source of energy instead of fossil fuels. In 2018, the transport sector contributed approximately 258 MT of CO 2 emissions or about 24.3 % of total CO 2 emissions worldwide. There are about 900 million cars that use carbon-based fuels in the transportation sector. Vehicles powered by IC engines emit a lot of harmful exhaust gases that contribute to both pollution and global warming because they use carbon-based fuels. Different factors along with using vehicles with internal combustion (IC) engines that produce harmful exhaust gases are responsible for pollution and global warming. This paper provides valuable insight into strategies like material modification, novel material development, and additives used by researchers to increase the safety of LIBs as well as motivation for further advancement in high energy density batteries.įor the last few decades, every country is struggling with pollution and global warming. The BTMS enhances the LIB’s safety from thermal abuses and the battery protective casing enhances the battery’s safety from mechanical and thermal abuses. The advances in the outer material to enhance battery safety involve the improvement in battery thermal management systems (BTMS) materials and battery protective casing materials. The advances in inner battery materials include improvements in cathode materials, and anode materials, using non-flammable electrolytes, flame-retardant additives, and overcharge protective additives, which help to improve the battery’s safety from electrochemical and thermal abuses. The safety strategies of LIBs from advances in inner battery material as well as in outer material perspective have been reviewed. The advances in materials include material modifications, the development of novel materials, and the use of additives. This review aims to summarize the safety concerns in LIBs, as well as the safety measures taken by various researchers and recent significant developments from a materials perspective.
